بیماری ویروسی ابولا نوعی بیماری انسانی است که از ویروس ابولا ناشی میشود. نام ویروس این بیماری از یکی از رودخانههای کشور زئیر، که امروزه جمهوری دموکراتیک کنگو نام دارد، گرفته شده. این بیماری برای اولین بار در کشور کنگو دیده شد. نشانههای این بیماری معمولاً دو روز تا سه هفته بعد از تماس با ویروس و به صورت تب، گلودرد، دردهای ماهیچهای و سردرد ظاهر میشوند. معمولاً حالت تهوع، استفراغ و اسهال و همچنین کاهش عملکرد کبد و کلیهها به دنبال این موارد میآیند. در این زمان، مبتلایان دچار خونریزی میشوند.
پیشگیری از این بیماری با کاهش گسترش آن از طریق میمونها و خوکهای آلوده به انسان صورت میگیرد. این کار را میتوان با بررسی و معاینهٔ حیوانات برای یافتن موارد آلودگی انجام داد و در صورت شناسایی آنها را کُشت و جسدشان را نابود کرد. پختن گوشت به اندازهٔ مناسب و پوشیدن لباسهای محافظتی هنگام تماس با گوشت نیز میتواند کمککننده باشد و همچنین هنگام حضور در اطراف شخص مبتلا به این بیماری میتوان لباسهای محافظتی پوشید و بعد دستها را شست. نمونهٔ مایعات و بافتهای بدن افراد مبتلا به این بیماری بایستی با احتیاط ویژه حمل شود.
هیچ درمانی تا کنون (۲۰۱۴) برای بیماری ویروسی ابولا وجود ندارد. مراقبتهای این بیماری شامل حفظ وضعیت طبیعی بدن، جلوگیری و تامین مایعات بدن، مقابله با کم آبی، مصرف داروهای ضد انعقاد خون در اوایل عفونت و جلوگیری از خونریزی، کلینیک درد، استفاده از آنتی بیوتیک و داروی ضد قارچ و کنترل سطح اکسیژن بدن و درمان عفونتهای ثانویه است.
